Bikes – BMX

BMX stands for bicycle motocross. BMX cycling and mountain biking started in California in the early 1970’s by children who wanted to race and jump with their bikes, the way the motocross motorcyclists did. The young cyclists customised their bikes, to ride off road. It’s a popular style of riding that is healthy and fun.

BMX bikes are fast and made from aluminium and chromoly, making them strong and light enough to withstand all the rigours of BMX racing and jumping. There are racing bikes BMX style and freestyle BMX bikes; with freestyle bikes coming in four different styles. Decide what you want the bike to do before you decide which one is for you.

Racing bikes BMX
Racing BMX bikes are built to be tough and lightweight. They are used for riding round tracks with jumps, so tyres on the racing BMX bikes have a better grip than a dirt bike. Races are called moto’s and the aim is to complete the laps as fast as possible.

Freestyle bikes BMX –
These bikes are specifically designed to perform stunts that are very similar to skateboarding stunts.  There are four different types of BMX freestyle to choose from; Dirt, Street, Ramp (Vert) and Flatland.

Dirt – Dirt bikes have strong, long frames and big handlebars. Cyclists perform jumps from a dirt track riding from jump to jump. Stunts are performed high in the air.
Street – These bikes are built to be fast and easy to maneuver. You can use them to ride around streets, and for doing tricks such as bunnyhops. The Street BMX bikes have stunt pegs to allow the cycles to ride the bike (grind) on railings and steps,
Ramp riding (Vert) – These bikes have front and rear brakes and are especially strong. Ramp riding is done on a ramp shaped like a U. Tricks are done high in the air, where riders will perform three hundred and sixty degree turns. ‘Vert’ is short for vertical.
Flatland- Flatland bikes are small and strong with front and rear brakes. The handlebars turn all the way round. These riders do all their stunts on tarmac or concrete.

There are clubs, races and competitions in all the styles of BMX riding and the internet has lots of information about bikes and tips on riding and performing stunts.
