Need some tips on which flowers to buy as a gift? Check out our ideas on how to find the perfect gift.

Quick tips

Colours – Flowers naturally look great in all colours, the trick is to buy the colours to match the person.  If you know the person well, this is an easy judgment call. If you’re buying for an acquaintance, choose natural colours - pastel shades; pinks, greens, lilacs and whites are perfect.

Less is more - Don’t always go for the biggest bunch. Sometimes a small bouquet of freesia is more appropriate than a huge bouquet of lilies.

Presentation – Just a few flowers can look fabulous if they are presented properly. Your flowers can be wrapped, tied with string or ribbon, boxed or displayed in a vase.

Seasonal – You can’t go wrong with seasonal flowers, so this is a good bet if you don’t know what to buy. Christmas flowers are gorgeous colours. Poinsettias will last all over Christmas and beyond. If you’d like to spend a bit more, add a box of chocolates to the gift.

Flower ideas

Sunflowers – Buy a bunch of sunflowers, discard the bag, and tie them with a natural piece of string - simple but look stunning.

Romantic flowers – Roses are the top choice for your partner. In the language of flowers, the red rose means true love. So, either a dozen red roses or a single red rose are great ways to say ‘I love you’.  Buy one red rose from the florist and ask them to tie it with a single piece of red ribbon, or order a dozen red roses and wrap with natural hessian and tissue paper.

Classic bouquets – Make your own bouquet. If you have flowers in your garden, cut some fresh blooms and tie them up with ribbon, or wrap in natural brown paper. You don’t have to be an expert to put an arrangement together. Experiment with colours and flowers.

Lavender – Cut up ten to twenty stems of fresh lavender.  You can keep these fresh in water, or put them in a dry vase to let them dry out. When they’ve dried out, use a purple ribbon to tie into a bundle.
