Mountain bikes – an overview of the IMBA website

For the many people who love to mountain bike, the IMBA website has lots of good information on routes, environmental issues, countryside networks, shops, maps and holidays. It’s a great website for every level of mountain biker.

The International Mountain Biking Association UK www.imba.org.uk/ supports all mountain bicycling in the UK and Ireland. They are a not for profit association, and they help to keep trails and paths clear for mountain bikers to enjoy. Their website is an excellent resource for finding trails and routes for cycling. It has links to plenty of other websites full of information including bike hire, where to stay, local information and images of the trails.

What are the benefits?
This site is chock full of goodies and tips for all mountain biking activities. You can join the organisation and help to keep the countryside bridleways and paths clear, so everyone can enjoy cycling. They send out a regular email and an occasional printed magazine called Trail.

IMBA affiliates
This section includes affiliates for business, websites and clubs. Each club gives an overview of what the club members can expect and the activities they do, and you can check out more information by clicking the direct link to the clubs’ websites. The business affiliates include bike shops, many being rider owned, local MTB café’s, outdoor resources, bike instruction, guided tours and coaching schools. The business section divides the UK websites into England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Europe categories, so it’s simple to find businesses in your area.

Where to ride
This section gives maps and external links to other websites with information on mountain bike trails. The MTB challenge trails map shows routes all over the UK. By clicking each individual route you can download maps and find information on routes, eating places, car parks, bike repair shops and local accommodation. For example the Dalbeattie trail has information on its granite rock, forest trails and the Dalbeattie mountain bike club. This is an excellent resource for finding trails all over the country.

Shop
The shop has IMBA clothes, trailbuilding manuals and guides and a good selection of maps to show you where to mountain bike in the UK and abroad. Areas include the Trans Cambrian Way, mountain bike trails in Snowdonia and southern Scotland. Some maps and guides are offered in Cd format.

Research and Reports
This section gives updates and news of campaigns, environmental work, tourism and research and the countryside recreation network.
