Mountain bike – a social sport

Mountain Bikes are an ideal way to get around trails and tracks, or if you are really energetic and adventurous, try out the trial Bikes or Dirtjump bikes. But for the average cyclist, a trail mountain bike is perfect. You can take off for the day, to enjoy the outdoors and challenge of riding over rugged terrain.

Holidays
If you enjoy mountain biking, there are plenty of holidays in hilly and scenic places. Spending time with other cyclists who enjoy the sport, in an idyllic location, is a great way to spend your holiday. Some holidays come with a full itinerary and you will know exactly what you will be doing each day and where you are going, or you can opt for a lazier holiday, where the destinations are perfect for mountain bikes, but you can do your own thing. Hotels and B&B’s are geared up for cyclists. They’ll have somewhere safe to park your bike and plenty of advice about local trails and where to ride. Whether it’s the UK or further afield, online mountain bike holidays have details of destinations, countries and itineraries. Groups are welcomed, so if you belong to a club, organise a trip for the whole club to enjoy.

Events
Cross country and dirt jumping are two totally different sports and usually all mountain bikers will choose just one to participate in. When you get your mountain bike, check out the local clubs to see if there is one in your area that holds meetings and races in your chosen sport. Most clubs welcome new people and are willing to let you go along to check out their activities. Clubs organise rallies, days out and competitions, so it’s a perfect way to be introduced to the sport and socialize with new people.

Cross Country racing
You don’t have to be super fit to participate in this sport, but the top racers are. Beginners can start at lower levels and work their way up to tougher courses. For many people, cross country racing is a social mountain bike event, and cyclists from every level are welcomed. It’s a great way to meet people who share a common interest. If you think you are up for the challenge, check out your nearest race and give it a go.

Downhill competitions
These competitions are set in some of the most beautiful and largest mountains throughout the UK and abroad. Riders are timed and must get to the finish line as fast as they can without any penalties such as punctures. You and your bike must be in top condition to participate in these competitions.
